![]() A few of the items in any given image may have been recently acquired, but most of them I have saved for years, knowing I might do something with them one day. – These still-life photographs are composed, with slow deliberation, over the course of many hours or days, and sometimes weeks or months, with instinct and impulse my main guides. In recent years, I have been thinking more and more of Samuel Beckett in connection with my still-life photographs they have some of that spirit. But my work is perhaps less whimsical than Cornell’s boxes, and less visionary than Huxley’s doors, and more concerned with memory and symbol. Considering the meaning of what one might put there or find there, one might even speak of the “drawers” of perception (with a nod to Aldous Huxley the pun is irresistible). – An artist with whom I feel a certain kinship in this regard is Joseph Cornell, who was also fond of using boxes, drawers, trays, shelves, and the like as settings for his constructions. They might be merely unusual, rather bizarre, or quite unrecognizable, like the “objets inconnus” of the surrealists. Others were selected for their physical qualities, or for their potential to be viscerally or subconsciously evocative. Often this was something of personal significance, as with a souvenir or a memento. ![]() ![]() I saved many of the objects in these still-life photographs because of something I saw or felt in them. – Objects of many kinds have always fascinated me – not just for their physical qualities such as shape and texture, but often for the unique resonances they induce in the mind. ![]()

![]() ![]() Story by Adam Voiland. The Pilgrim Story - the hazardous Mayflower voyage, the 1620 landing, the fearful first winter, the First Thanksgiving at Plymouth - is one of America’s enduring founding narratives. NASA Earth Observatory images by Joshua Stevens, using Landsat data from the U.S. During their time in the city, the Pilgrims would have experienced a celebratory thanksgiving service and festival that was held each year on October 3 to mark the 1574 end of the Spanish siege of the city. While there continues to be debate among historians about the circumstances and influences that led to the first Thanksgiving, there is evidence that the roots of the tradition might be traced back to Leiden. Both ships were supposed to sail to the New World together, but the Speedwell was found to be taking on water and returned to port. They charted a course to Southampton, in southern England, and met up with the Mayflower. After continuing toward Delfshaven and staying there for a night, the group boarded the Speedwell, a 60-ton vessel capable of trans-Atlantic voyages. This narrow canal fed into the larger Vliet canal, which flows from Leiden toward Delft. Leiden was a city of many canals, so when the Scrooby pilgrims were ready to leave in July 1620, they boarded several small boats on the Rapenburg canal (near the university). Tough economic conditions in Leiden meant few new recruits from England were willing to join them Dutch culture was perceived to be a bad influence on the children and there was a looming possibility that Holland would go to war with Spain, a leading Catholic power. Still, about a decade after they had arrived, the congregation decided it was time to move once again. ![]() It allowed the congregation to use one of its chapels to hold services, and some of the Pilgrims enrolled and attended occasional lectures in theology, medicine, and other topics. Others were carpenters, soldiers, teachers, pipe makers, and hat makers. People cobbled together whatever work they could-about half of the congregation took jobs as textile workers, the leading industry in Leiden at the time. Most of the hundred or so people in the Pilgrim congregation lived in one-room cottages near Leiden University, in the shadow of the Pieterskerk, the oldest church in the city. When Robinson and Brewster’s flock arrived, the population was 40,000. On May 8, 2016, the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on the Landsat 8 satellite captured this image of modern-day Leiden. This prompted many from the Scrooby congregation to move on to Leiden. Life in Amsterdam offered the group the freedom to worship as they liked, but there the congregation quickly became embroiled in theological disputes and scandals with other separatists. The Pilgrims were religious nonconformists-Calvinist dissidents who disliked the hierarchical authority of the Anglican Church and sought a more democratic and direct religious experience. Led by William Brewster and John Robinson, the group initially fled to Amsterdam in 1608 to escape religious persecution for holding clandestine services that were not sanctioned by the Church of England. It is sometimes overlooked, however, that Plymouth was not the first stop for this congregation of religious separatists from the town of Scrooby in the English county of Nottinghamshire.īefore ever setting foot in North America, the Pilgrims spent several years living in Holland. Most school children in America learn about the Pilgrims-the group of English settlers who endured a harrowing journey to the New World in 1620 on the Mayflower. ![]() ![]() In the 20 years since we last saw bounty hunter Samus Aran run around in one of these 2D space stations, there have been several indie games modelled on the Metroid format – such as Iconoclasts, and Hollow Knight – that offer far more atmosphere, depth and life than Dread's slickly predictable tunnels.įor newcomers who may arrive here with different expectations, it may be a challenge to stay invested. There is little to hold the player in the world beyond the feeling of a perfectly executed attack or dodge. Metroid Dread is proficient at all of this: it feels good to play, for a while. A limited map you unlock gradually and rewardingly. #Super metroid gates over falling blocks series#The recipe for a Metroid game is clear and concise: there's a labyrinthine system of rooms and corridors, an oppressive science-fiction environment, an escalating series of power-ups. At best, it'd just be a feature or something Like, when I play two completely different JRPGs, I don't really think about how I wish one was more like the other. A shame because you can like more than one thing at once and not constantly go on about how one game should just be a copy and paste of the other, especially not when they're so different, as you pointed out. Unfortunately, with gaming communities being as toxic and so willing to compare in order to prop up or knock down other games because of who made it, what platform it's in, etc., that was always bound to happen. In general, Hollow Knight is rarely knocked down, even on Era. However, like you said, that's just reactionary to how a lot of Hollow Knight fans have been trying to knock down Metroid Dread, for whatever reason. There are areas where the game can be criticized but the criticism needs to be in good faith and not about what the game is aiming for. ![]() As much as I couldn't end up getting into Hollow Knight, I myself never found the non-linearity or large map downsides at all, albeit I do wish there were more points to move quickly between areas and with more direction but I imagine many might find that more nitpicky. It's a bit much.ĭread does use items to great effect, and FYI I freaking loved it, moreso than every other Metroid games I've played besides SM, but am I not allowed to think they could have handled gating a bit differently? I think it would have been funner to give a bit more freedom and let us use some items earlier in the game outside of actual puzzles.Ĭlick to shrink.Oh I won't disagree with that. In Dread, you have missile doors, super missile doors, plants, grappling hook blocks, doors you need to Stealth through, doors you need to aeion dash through, doors you need to hook, doors you need to charge shot, storm missile doors, plasma doors, large shot doors, phase beam doors. After that, all the "Gates" are locked behind environmental puzzles mostly using movement related items (and the frost beam) which are useful for the duration of the whole game and not just for puzzles or gates. Super Metroid has 3 color gates, one you can open after five minutes, the second after 30 and the last one at the half-point. I think I know it well enough to compare Dread to it. ![]() I've finished Super Metroid over 100 times. ![]() I wish people were more understanding of that fact instead of trying to push this never ending pissing contest about which approach is objectively better. Obviously there's still some crossover appeal between the two, but someone that likes Metroid isn't necessarily guaranteed to like Hollow Knight and vice versa. Metroid leans in hard into its much faster pacing and the incredible depth of its movement mechanics while Hollow Knight is much more about raw exploration and discovery (which comes at the cost of less complex moment to moment gameplay). I wish Hollow Knight wasn't brought up as much as it is in these threads because the appeal to me isn't even similar to a Metroid game at all beyond having upgrades and an interconnected map. It's kind of understandable because overenthusiastic Hollow Knight stans are really fucking obnoxious and people want to take them down a peg, but it's pretty unfair to the game itself (which does basically everything it sets out to do excellently). I've seen a ton of reactionary complaining recently about Hollow Knight's huge map and non-linearity, even though those two aspects are arguably the main appeal of the game. ![]() ![]() ![]() Rodrigo, who at the time was known only for her appearance in High School Musical: The Musical: The Series and for her semi–viral hit “All I Want,” quickly became an overnight sensation. ![]() For more information, please visit you said the name Olivia Rodrigo just seven months ago, only a few heads would have turned. Landing on Billboard when you’re an independent or rising artist is no easy task, but once you’ve reached the charts, the opportunities are endless. And, though these three areas aren't the only ones taken into consideration when ranking songs and albums, they can give any artist a boost. Having a song chart on a Billboard chart as an indie artist is absolutely not impossible, especially if you're an active, touring musician with a strong fanbase. A great way to increase the likelihood of entering the charts is with a pre-order of your album, since all sales prior to the actual release date of the album count as first week sales. To become a Heatseeker, you need to sell, on average, 450 to 500 albums in the first week. Aside from the ability to sell the album in stores, you increase your chance of moving towards the charts. BILLBOARD MAGAZINE CODEBy scanning the bar codes, the system collects sales information from over 14,000 retail and nontraditional sources such as online stores and concert sales. If you’re an independent musician, you absolutely must get a UPC code for your album. Album salesīillboard uses Nielsen SoundScan, which is an information system that tracks sales of music and music videos in the United States and Canada. Reaching out to fans through social media and having them hashtag your album or track is a great marketing technique to drive album sales and move songs up the charts. ![]() Since Billboard takes social media and streaming into consideration, make sure you're engaging your fans and mentioning your music. According to Billboard, it was "the first song to start at the summit by an artist essentially unknown prior to charting." This sent Baauer's song straight to the top of the Hot 100 chart for five consecutive weeks. He released his song " Harlem Shake" in 2012, having almost no airplay until it became an internet meme in early 2013. YouTube was the most recent addition to tracking plays, which worked well for American DJ Baauer. In recent years, Billboard has also considered streaming and social interactions on Twitter, Facebook, Vevo, YouTube, Spotify, and other popular music websites like Slacker and Rdio. BILLBOARD MAGAZINE TVThe data from BDS is used not only by Billboard, but also by radio stations, record company executives, publishing firms, performance rights organizations, music retailers, and film and TV producers. This process is done 24/7 and captures over 100 million songs annually. BDS uses digital pattern-recognition technology to identify songs that air on radio and TV channels across the United States and Canada. Airplay is tracked through Broadcast Data Systems (BDS). If you’re new to getting airplay, make sure you familiarize yourself with the process. ![]() If a song is repeatedly played on the radio, you can bet it’s on the charts. Bridging the gap takes time, chance, incessant marketing, and unquestionable talent – but which factors does Billboard take into consideration to determine which songs make it on the charts? Specific methodologies can be found on each chart page on, but here's how the big three work: Meanwhile, f or unsigned artists, there seems to be a gap from successful musician to chart-topping Billboard smash hit. For artists on the rise, Billboard has the Uncharted (which measures social activity and streaming) and Heatseeker charts, along with the well-known Top 40, Hot 100 and Billboard 200, as well as individual category charts. Many artists' perception of "making it" comes directly from those shiny gold and platinum records awarded by how high your song can climb. With its wide variety of charts, Billboard has measured music success since 1940. ![]() ![]() RocketReach has given us a great place to start. I own a bunch of DCS modules, and the Viper is definitely my favourite one! This is such versatile fighter jet, great both in air combat, as well as for ground attacks. I can barely think of any reason why you would regret the purchase, except of maybe one: if you are badly into carrier landing, then this is probably not your plane as a Viper cannot land on a carrier. If you are looking for a modern multi-role fighter and only can/want to spend your money on just one DCS module, then at the moment this is definitely your clear choice! (disclaimer: Eurofighter and Strike Eagle were not released to DCS yet as of this writing - those might change that overall picture in future) #REVIEW CRYPT OF THE NECRODANCER AMPLIFIED EGM FULL#With how half-baked this company releases planes, no one should be buying these modules at full price. If you want a plane that can handle some anti-ground stuff on top of shooting bandits down and don't mind the lack of carrier capabilities, this is the plane for you.Īlso, please get this at a discount like I did. ![]() Though after seeing the F/A-18 getting about 10x more content and attention than this craft, I can't help but feel a little cheated. I recommend Briefing Room for a quick and easy mission generator, as well as swinging by the ED website and find some nice user-created missions and skins for this bird. The cockpit is set up very nicely and just about every button is clickable, so you don't have to bind a billion modifiers on your controller or flight stick. If I'm spending $50-$80 on a single plane, it should feel like more care went into it, more respect considered for the aircraft and the people interested in it.īut really, the plane isn't difficult to learn. Most ED fanboys point you to Youtube and the many tutorials other users have made (which is very generous of these youtubers, as the ones paid to make this plane couldn't be bothered with making their training missions with the same level of quality), but I don't want to watch a 20-minute video while I have my game paused. ![]() I feel like, the training missions should really go over each system of the plane, like the MFDs and the targeting pods and setting up countermeasures, really flesh out everything this great plane is capable of - sessions that compliment the manual, so you can really get your hands on what you just read. #REVIEW CRYPT OF THE NECRODANCER AMPLIFIED EGM MANUAL#Aside from expecting you have read the manual first (which honestly isn't so bad and is a fun read if you're genuinely interested in how these planes work), the 'instructors' basically just say 'press this, and this, and then this' without really going over WHY I'm pressing this, and this, and then this. ![]() Three missions and some Instant Action missions that are nice for practice. It's hard not to get burnt out learning how this craft works when NOTHING is waiting for you after learning it. I guess because of the sorry state ED released the F-16 in, the general opinion for this plane is low compared to the other modules, so there's hardly any content for this plane, both paid third-party and user-created. While this isn't entirely a positive review, I won't leave it as a negative one because overall, I am very pleased with the F-16, and I don't regret getting it - I just regret getting it as my first true module.ĭON'T GET THIS MODULE IF YOU MOSTLY PLAY SINGLE-PLAYER ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() You’re encouraged to drive routes accurately yourself, as this will improve how your AI employees operate them when you’re working elsewhere. As such, this is the definitive way to experience Shadow of the Colossus’ soundtrack outside of, perhaps, that excellent vinyl release. Here again, the remake does an excellent job of just improving what came before as opposed to messing with something that already works. The music is epic in a traditional sense, but it impressively manages to enhance that overwhelming sense of loneliness despite its triumphant tones. While much of Shadow plays out in relative silence, the game’s sparse tracks are among the best in gaming history. The game’s music and sound are even better. It’s certainly the one title we’d recommend you turn to when you’re looking to showcase your new 4K set-up. Simply put, this PlayStation 4 remake is arguably the best looking game of this modern generation. Meanwhile, the original title’s ambitious scale has been left unaltered except when it could be improved upon. The visuals have been cleaned-up so that you can clearly see every vibrant detail of the game’s word. The animation featured in this remake is arguably flawless. This PlayStation 4 remake addresses all of those issues. However, Shadow of the Colossus crowning achievement may just be its minimalistic visuals and sound design. Is this a story about environmentalism? A narrative about the perils of what we consider to be true love? An epic journey that criticizes a generation’s willingness to abandon the old ways for largely selfish reasons? That lingering argument is a testament to the game’s brilliant use of minimalism as both a blank canvas for several ideas and a fully-realized masterpiece. The moral ambiguity of Shadow of the Colossus’ central quest has been dissected by just about every who has played it, yet, we really haven’t reached a true consensus regarding the game’s overall message. If that’s the case, then why do you feel as if you’re depriving the world of something beautiful for largely selfish reasons? Because you don’t know much about your hero or their motivations, you’re sometimes left to assume their quest is a righteous one. Shadow of the Colossus makes you feel like a true villain in a way that games which openly cast you as a villain struggle to do. That realization is the crux of the game’s considerable emotional presence. That tiny detail eventually leads to the realization that these seemingly terrifying creatures are really majestic wonders who have likely been peacefully wandering this world for generations. Instead, you often must trigger the fight by using your bow and arrow or sword. ![]() You see, none of the game’s colossus boss battles involve the creatures aggressively initiating combat. That’s due partially to the sheer scale of the creatures – you really get the impression you are but an ant to them – but it has more to do with the moral implications of these battles. “It would be nice to talk about all the struggles we’ve been through, but there’s a lot of things that we can’t say yet. Many people who played Shadow of the Colossus when it was released will tell you that their first battle with a colossus is among their favorite moments in gaming history. “We thought that Ico and Shadow of the Colossus took a long time to develop, so one of the missions of The Last Guardian was that we wanted to create something good in a short period of time, so the fact that it took a long time to develop was completely unexpected for me,” said Ueda After such a long time, it seems The Last Guardian is finally back on track.Ĭonsidering its long development cycle it might surprise you to learn that, in an interview with IGN, game director Fumito Ueda revealed that the team had hoped the development period for the game would be fairly short. ![]() SHADOW OF THE COLOSSUS 2 THE LAST GUARDIAN GAMEPLAY PS4However, at E3 2015, Sony opened their show by re-announcing The Last Guardian for the PS4 and showed off a brand new gameplay trailer. ![]() Unfortunately it went through development hell and, by early 2015, many fans were under the impression that the game had been cancelled.
